Introduction

Bournemouth Pier has a long history within the community and has played a vital role in the region's tourism. The pier is used as a symbol of identity for the town and hosts a range of events from races, carnivals, fairs, concerts to firework displays. Yet its heritage has been unexplored and its prominent place within the community not celebrated. The OUR PIER project brings to life the wealth of memories from the past and captures the story of this amazing landmark. With thousands of people visiting the pier each year, the project captures 150 years of history on film to inspire future generations with true stories and romantic tales; breathing life into a pier which most local people use without a second thought.

OUR PIER was supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and by Bournemouth Borough Council through an Arts Grant. The production united talented young people, the local community and award-winning film-makers to seek out untold stories using the magic of the movies to celebrate Bournemouth's most renowned landmark. Integrated into the production was an active learning experience for young people and lifelong learning for adults, bringing a practical history project to life and leaving a legacy of new skills for the future.
