About The Project

The OUR PIER project started life in 2006 as plans for the Bournemouth 2010 Bicentenary started to inspire local businesses and people. Enthused by a previous project called THE ROYAL PIER, White Lantern Film developed a project to capture and preserve the pier’s history, memories and story for future generations.

In 2007 after a successful application to the Heritage Lottery Fund and Bournemouth Borough Council work commenced to research the pier’s history and seek out untold stories from the pier’s past. Over the next year the White Lantern Film team spent hundreds of hours sifting through archives, reviewing photos, interviewing over 300 people, consulting experts and historians and distributing over 10000 leaflets, posters and postcards to seek out forgotten memories.

Throughout the year the White Lantern team arranged seven events at locations ranging from Bournemouth Pier to the Nationwide Building Society. The events aimed to inspire and encourage people to engage with the project and to be interviewed on camera. The interviews later were either edited into the main documentary or form part of the Bournemouth Pier Voices film available on the DVD; for more information about the events click here.

As part of the project over 15 young people were supported and trained in a range of technical, creative and event management skills as they worked alongside the team as part of the OUR PIER Active Learning Programme; for more information about this click here. The project also engaged the local community with training and lifelong learning providing new opportunities to gain transferable skills and to help guide the direction of the project; for more information about this click here.

In 2008, despite poor weather, production began on the documentary and after a four week shoot and a three week edit the final documentary and DVD was completed.
